Why we use InterWorx or why you should use InterWorx when you are using multiple IP’s?
As you can see from interworx’s website (http://www.interworx.com), interworx is very similar in function to cPanel, but presents its information in a much simpler interface. One major difference between the two is the way they interface with the server. In simple terms, cPanel stands between the application you are managing (for example, the web server, mail server, spam prevention software, etc.) and acts like a ‘translator’. You enter information in cPanel, it stores this information, and then via a system a scripts it implements your configuration in the software or application you are using. Interworx, on the other hand, installs itself off to the side thereby allowing the server to function normally regardless of what Interworx is doing. Whereas cPanel completely changes every aspect of the server to suit its requirements, interworx acts almost like a human technician would. Interworx interfaces with the server when it needs to but the rest of the time it just sits on the sidelines watching and monitoring. It has no active role on the server unless changes are being made. In fact, you could turn interworx off after configuring a server and there would be no major consequence.
These two approaches to server management aren’t normally a big issue for most hosting providers, however, when one gets in to multiple-IP hosting the drawbacks of cPanel’s approach become glaringly apparent. The underlying operating systems these management tools run on (CentOS in this case) aren’t very efficient when it comes to having several IPs on a single server. In the real world, having 10 or 20 IPs would be the exception; many servers have far fewer. As such, when you start piling IPs on a server, a lot of bad things happen, including crashes, loss of the IP database, IP to account mapping, customer domain information, and more. When you have cPanel on a server, the underlying problems with the operating system cannot be dealt with independently because cPanel must have the box configured in one specific manner or it won’t work. If it doesn’t work, the box is effectively broken. With interworx, one can tune a server to handle lots of IP addresses without affecting the function of the control panel and therefore you can dramatically reduce the risk of problems related to serving a lot of IPs.
In our extensive experience, we normally see problems start to develop when a server has between 70 and 90 IP addresses, depending on how the server is configured and what it is running. As such, we generally shy away from supporting cPanel or DirectAdmin installations on systems with more than 50 IPs. We certainly don’t want to install and support a server that we feel beforehand will have problems and result in an unhappy customer, so we recommend interworx. Since you are requesting 100IPs, we strongly recommend interworx in your case. Our standard modified OS with Interworx server can handle 1,000IPs without issue. More can be added after the initial 1,000 sites are up and the box is tuned to the requirements of the content already present.
